Figure Review: Rei Ayanami Revoltech Fraulein
Rei Ayanami: If Blondes have more fun, what about girls with Blue hair?
I caved in. For years, I thought collecting Anime figures was for weirdos. I neglected to consider that my own brother already thought I was a weirdo for holding on to all those Star Wars figures I had as a kid, even ones my brother offloaded on me. So what was different about Anime figures?
Well, to be honest, Anime figure collectors and Star Wars figure collectors have a similar passion for different things. The difference is that Star Wars figure collectors are nervy about opening the packets of their figures, whereas Anime figure collectors open the packets often to display and enjoy their acquisitions. And I like this philosophy of figure collection, why bother collecting the damn things if you can’t enjoy them?
So I went to my local Anime shop, and there she was, in a small package near some Evangelion trade figures. The Rei Ayanami Revoltech Fraulein figure. I like this figure a lot, and it’s not an embarrassing thing to have in your room. It’s a Revoltech figure, not a revolting figure. Mind you, I don’t mind saucier Anime figures, because they’re good for “life art” practice (I use my figures for sketching and for play/display). It’s just that if you still live with your parents, this Revoltech Fraulein figure is as safe a bet as you can get not to offend anybody you love or care about, and who may be concerned with your mental health if they catch you playing with dolls. DOLLS of all things, for a young man to be playing with.
I admit it, I played with a Barbie set once that belonged to my cousin, to see if Action Man could get some romance in his life and steal the poncey Ken’s girlfriend to show her what a real man is. Sadly, this amounted to jests from my brother and cousin that still haven’t ceased. Yet Anime figures, especially female ones, aren’t as gender associated as Barbies are to play with. There’s no shame for a man to own Anime figures, as compared to playing with Barbies which will usually get you a harsh talking to and a trip to therapy.
But enough awkward nostalgia, how’s Rei out of the box?
Rei Ayanami in Revoltech Fraulein form is not only stunning to look at but if the arms fall off you can easily reattach them. For beginning Anime figure collectors I can hardly recommend a better one to start your collection with, because everyone needs a bit of Rei in their lives, and you might do worse than pick up this version of her which is well designed not only in aesthetics but in functionality. She’s very posable, to the extent you can, with practice, position her for a number of figure photos at various angles. Aspiring Manga artists take heed, if you can’t get the hang of figure drawing from books, try drawing Rei from “life”. I’ve found it’s much easier to sketch figures of characters from Anime than just trying to do fan art without something three dimensional to use as a reference.
This version of Rei comes with a display stand (for those action poses in mid air) a lance of longinus (I haven’t watched far enough into Evangelion to know what this is for yet, but for now I like to think it’s designed to castrate Shinji in the event of his Oedipal urges towards Rei) and not counting the hands already attatched to Rei in the box, two sets of additional hands. This Rei is a very handsy woman, as I will explain below.
She’s handsy because she has a variety of hands to choose from and attach to her wrists when you want to change what sort of pose she can do. There’s a set of hands for holding the lance of longinus (for Shinji castrating action, I can only imagine), open palm hands for leaning, and closed palm hands for the anxious look many otaku find moe. I don’t find anxiety in a woman moe, suffering from anxiety myself I find it absolutely horrible to live with, and I certainly wouldn’t force it on a woman just so she can look moe. But that’s just my opinion.
However, the hands for the beginner figure collector might be difficult to get used to changing. Make sure you have a special sealable plastic lunchbox to store your extra Rei parts in when you’re not using them, because you don’t want to lose them. I frequently slipped at first, dropping vital parts on the floor and having to pick them up again before I lost sight of them. But with time I realised that the additional hands need to be twisted onto the wrist joint slowly as to widen the hole for the hand. After you realise this, changing the hands is not a problem. This is the only one quibble I had with this figure.
The Lance of Longinus sounds like a sleazy pet name for a man’s you know what, but it’s very impressive in size, and will no doubt intimidate the masculinity of warrior action figures like Naruto and his lameo pals. Only a figure of Cloud from Final Fantasy VII would probably have the guts to take her on with his own sword-so-big-he’s-probably-compensating-for-something blade of power. It’s taller than the actual figure of Rei is, and Rei can be posed in a variety of ways with it to look fearsome (for those of you feminist figure collectors who are tired of Rei’s too often explored fragile side).
Well, I don’t know if I can say much more about this Rei figure, apart from the fact that if you liked Evangelion or Rei and would like to own a female Anime figure who won’t embarrass you in front of your friends, or simply want a posable figure to start your collection, check it out if you can find one. It’s worth the investment, is well designed and looks great. The scale of the figure is suitable so you can have adventures with her playing with Skeletor and He-Man’s friends just as much as she would appeal to the figure photographer who is less action figure playful as a collector of art objects. I think it’s a good find and will no doubt provide you with hours of entertainment.

I'd say I'm totally addicted to Rei now. I'm halting my Transformers collecting because of her, and it's good I've got loads of sources of cheap but good quality figures which will make my collection grow at a faster pace.
However, I would keep them in their packaging because I'm very, very concerned with the issue of figures bending, and I would want to avoid that as much as possible. After all, they're still visible in their packaging, so I can still display them boxed. However, I would probably take them out regularly to check on them or whenever I feel like taking photos. Though recently I've been into trading figures and gashapons so I also have a few Rei figures that are displayed in my cabinet.
And yes, Rei stuff takes priority over other Evangelion stuff. I don't buy pairs with Asuka or whatever character is included in a set, I just get the Rei, nothing else.
Enjoy and thanks for viewing!

Creators Labo #015 Rei Ayanami (REFLECT) 1/6th Scale Yamato

REFLECT is known for his quality sculpts, and this rendition of Shunya Yamashita’s envisionment of Rei Ayanami from Evangelion is no exception. Absolutely gorgeous and stunningly beautiful, it is perhaps in my opinion one of the best non-anime versions of Rei yet. The question is, could Yamato pull it off? Don’t get me wrong, Yamato is a solid company, but after seeing the shoddy work on Final Fight’s Poison, my opinion strayed off a bit.
Looking at the pictures from Hobbysearch, the paint seems decent. Since her hair is shorter I wouldn’t expect any noticeable paint flaws. Overall, the added bonus of being 1/6th scale, I think this figure is well worth the $60 dollar tag.
Rei Ayanami has been out in Japan since late December, and is around ¥6,460
For those of us in America, I believe Ayanami is available now at Kidnemo for $60.89

What do you guys think about her? I haven’t seen any posts on her yet, so the only pictures I have to judge are the ones taken at HobbySearch.
