Summer Wars, 'Elemi' Win at 64th Mainichi Film Awards

The 63rd annual Mainichi Film Awards were announced on Wednesday, and the Summer Wars anime feature and the "Denshin-Bashira Elemi no Koi" anime short were among the winners. Mamoru Hosoda and MADHOUSE's Summer Warswon the Animation Film Award, while Hideto Nakata and Sovat Theater's "Denshin-Bashira Elemi no Koi" received the Noburou Oofuji Award in honor of the "perfection" in its stop-motion animation.

Summer Wars had previously won an Award of Excellence in the Animation category the 33rd Japan Academy Prizes, the Grand Prize in the Animation division of the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards, the highest award within the Anima't section at last year's Sitges film festival, and an award from the Digital Content Association of Japan.

"Denshin-Bashira Elemi no Koi" had already won an Excellence Prize in the Animation Division of the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards. A trailer is available on the YouTube video website.

Manami Konishi won the Best Actress Award for her work in Akira Ogata's live-action remake of Kiwa Irie's 1995-1998 Nonchan Noriben manga series. Ittoku Kishibe won the Best Supporting Actor Award for Fujiro Mitsuishi's live-action adaptation (trailer) of Hiromi Morishita's award-winning Osaka Hamlet manga.

Rookies: Graduation (Rookies -Sotsugyō-), Yūichirō Hirakawa's theatrical finale to his live-action television drama adaptation of Masanori Morita's Rookies baseball manga, won the Tsutaya Movie Fan Award. The late actor Hisaya Morishige (Hakujaden, Princess Mononoke) earned a special award. The late actress and pioneering producer Takiko Mizunoe (Season of the Sun) also won a special award.
