2010 anime of fantasy light novel franchise by Takaya Kagami

The March issue of Fujimi Shobo's Dragon Magazine will confirm on January 20 that an anime adaptation of Takaya Kagami's Densetsu no Yūsha no Densetsu fantasy light novel franchise has been green-lit for 2010. The online preview of that issue deliberately conceals the headline announcing the anime.

The story revolves around Raina Ryūto, an apathetic student who always dozes off at the Roland Imperial Special Academy. One day, Raina and his classmates get caught in the war waged by the opposing Kingdom of Esutabūru, and he loses many friends. After the battle, Raina goes on a quest on behalf of the Roland Empire and Emperor Shion Astaaru, even as the darkness that has enveloped the land has begun to consume the empire.

Kagami began the original light novel in 2002, and has since published 17 out of 21 planned full-length volumes and 15 out of 25 planned short story collections. Saori Toyota draws the novel illustrations and also drew a Nantonaku Densetsu no Yūsha no Densetsu manga series that was compiled into one book volume. Hiroko Nagakura has been drawing a manga adaptation in Fujimi Shobo's Monthly Dragon Age magazine since 2008 and has published three compiled book volumes.

Update: More background and story information added.
